GRIHA
TERI – GRIHA:
The Energy Resource Institute – Green Rating For Integrated Habitat Assessment
TERI, being deeply committed to every aspect of sustainable development, took upon itself the responsibility of acting as a driving force to popularize green building by developing a tool for measuring and rating a building’s environmental performance in the context of India’s varied climate and building practices. This tool, by its qualitative and quantitative assessment criteria, would be able to ‘rate’ a building on the degree of its ‘greenness’.
The rating would be applied to new and existing building stock of varied functions – commercial, institutional, and residential.
LSquare Team works very closely with GRIHA standards to get maximum benefits designed for Indian geographies. Most of the Indian government institutions are already pursuing GRIHA green building codes for their newly infrastructure. LSquare has certified professionals for GRIHA to take end to end certifications. To meet GRIHA requirements, LSquare has invested significant efforts to conduct Fundamental to advance commissioning services to meet some of the credit requirements.
Highlights of GRIHA rating system:
> Indigenous rating system developed by TERI for rating the buildings in India.
> Addresses environmental; concerns holistically
> Applicable to Residential, Commercial and Institutional buildings, its easy to adopt
> 100 point system with a set of 32 – criteria of which some are mandatory.
On a broader scale, this system, along with the activities and processes that lead up to it, will benefit the community at large with the improvement in the environment by reducing GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, improving energy security, and reducing the stress on natural resources.
Some of the benefits of a green design to a building owner, user, and the society as a whole are as follows:
> Reduced energy consumption without sacrificing the comfort levels
> Reduced destruction of natural areas, habitats, and biodiversity, and reduced soil loss from erosion etc.
> Reduced air and water pollution (with direct health benefits)
> Reduced water consumption
> Limited waste generation due to recycling and reuse
> Reduced pollution loads
> Increased user productivity
> Enhanced image and marketability
ESTIDAMA:
ESTIDAMA Buildings and Communities Program initiated by the Abu Dhabi government under the direction of Emirates of Abu Dhabi Urban planning council with the aim of making the Abu Dhabi the sustainable capital of Arab world.
The Pearl Rating System for ESTIDAMA is a framework for sustainable design, construction and operation of communities, buildings and villas. The Pearl Rating System is unique in the world and is specifically tailored to the hot climate and arid environment of Abu Dhabi. The extreme summer temperatures of Abu Dhabi reach 48°C and humidity levels can be near 100%. Air conditioning consumes large amounts of electrical energy. Water is a precious resource due to scarcity of fresh water resources, high evaporation rates, infrequent rainfall averaging less than 100mm/year .
The program has six main elements that are being carried out simultaneously:
> New Green Building Guidelines
> Institutions and Pearls Rating System
> Existing Building Guidelines
> Public Building Guidelines
> Industrial Buildings Guidelines
> Community Guidelines (this program)
The first five elements will focus primarily at the building level, functioning to ensure that existing and new buildings incorporate a variety of construction and operational techniques and technology to advance sustainability goals such as energy and water conservation.
The Goals of the rating system are as follows:-
Promote compact, mixed-use development that will
> Substantially reduce vehicle miles traveled and greenhouse gas emissions,
> Reduce costs of providing infrastructure and public services, and
> Support mass transit
The ESTIDAMA Pearl Rating System (PRS) assesses sustainability performance of communities, buildings and villas. The PRS has been designed to support sustainable development from design to construction to operational accountability and provides guidance and requirements to rate a project’s potential performance in relation to the four pillars of ESTIDAMA. The program encompasses the Pearl Community Rating System, the Pearl Building Rating System and Pearl Villa Rating System.
The Pearl Rating System is part of the government wide collaborative initiative to improve the lives of all citizens living in Abu Dhabi Emirate, by supporting the social and cultural traditions and values of Abu Dhabi. It reinforces what this unique place has been in the past and hopes to be long into the future.
