The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.

LEED has evolved since its original inception in 1998 to more accurately represent and incorporate emerging green building technologies. Following are the categories corresponding to the rating system.

To facilitate Green Building construction in India and steer and guide building activities, CII – Godrej GBC, has taken a “Green” step forward, and has formed a separate National level council called the “Indian Green Building Council.”

The vision of Indian Green Building Council is to emerge CII-Godrej GBC as the Centre of Excellence for Green Buildings in India and function as the key motivator for construction of these buildings. CII-Godrej GBC has signed a MoU with US Green Building Council (USGBC) on exchange of information on Green Buildings with the support of United Sates Agency for International Development (USAID)

LEED-INDIA for New Construction

Basically, this programme is for those buildings where the design and operation is fully in the scope and control of owner or the developer. LEED-INDIA for New Construction and Major Renovations is a green building rating system that helps to guide and design high-performance commercial buildings.

IGBC Green Factory Building rating system

IGBC Green Factories rating system is the first of its kind addressing sustainability in industrial buildings. IGBC Green Factory Rating System is a voluntary and consensus based programme. This rating system would facilitate the development of green factories. The rating system evaluates certain credit points using a prescriptive approach and other credits on a performance based approach. IGBC Green Townships Rating System

IGBC continuously works to provide tools that facilitate the adoption of green building practices in India. The development of ‘IGBC Green Townships Rating System’ is another important step in this direction. The rating system is designed to address large developments and it is mandatory to include residential development as part of the township. IGBC Green Townships rating system is applicable for large developments & townships. Townships can be predominantly commercial, industrial or retail but should necessarily comprise of a residential component. Atleast 25% of the total built-up area (in sq. m.) within the township should be earmarked for residential use, for it to qualify for certification.

IGBC along with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has prepared the Green SEZ guidelines. IGBC has further developed IGBC Green SEZ Rating System as an extension of the Green SEZ guidelines which encourages the projects to exceed the requirements of many codes and standards.
